Research And Planning: 1940's Film - 'To Have and Have Not'

'To Have and Have Not'

As part of my own research into 1940's film I have chosen 3 films along with their posters and a romantic scene. I am going to use this research to help my group and I when filming the 1940's scenes for our trailer and when designing our posters.

From the poster for the 1940's film 'To have and have not' I can see that the male character clearly plays the dominant role. This is because in the 1940's it was still a patriarchal society where men were the dominant gender. The colours are very plain and the red text chosen for the title reflects the romance genre. The poster has a 'artisic' sort of effect as if the poster has been draw by hand. I think this effect would be useful as our narrative is based on a diary/book. It will also introduce the 1940's themes within the trailer and make it look authentic.

Research and Planning: Production Schedule

Below you will find a production schedule which our group has come up with together. It will guide us and help us with keeping track of our progress and any work which still needs doing.

Research And Planning: Group Meeting 3

Our group had another meeting today about taking a cinema trip of our own to watch a romance film. This will give us an insight into the content which is put into a trailer and things which are missed out. We will also get the chance to see trailers for other romance films as we learnt from watching 'Annabelle' a few weeks earlier the trailer featured before the movie are catered to the audience and genre. It is possible that we will be going to watch 'Love, Rosie' which I have already poster and done a quick analysis of. Once going to the cinema I will create a follow up post which features some more information and any ideas which our group had while being out.

Research And Planning: Examples Of Editing Within Romance Trailers

Within this trailer for the film 'One Day' there are many fades to black and white. I believe this is to show the beginning and end of the relationship between the characters. I think this type of editing transition will work well with our trailer as it will show the flashbacks of the character and the end of the relationship between the characters also.

The trailer for 'The Notebook' includes several dissolves. I believe these will also be effective within our romance trailer as it will show that each clip is linked and has some sort of connection in some way. This will be most effective when showing the two characters from 1940 and 2014 as it will show their relationship and that they are linked.

Research And Planning: Garage Band Challenge

This is my practice sound test. I have created a narrative which includes a person walking into a restaurant and going back in time to re-live the past. I got this inspiration from About Time in which the main character can travel back in time. I created this atmosphere by using rain and traffic with a romantic and slow piano sound in the background. Once the character enters the room I used a door slamming and cut off the rain and traffic to change the atmosphere. I then added talking and general background noise to create the sense that the character was inside. To create the sense that the character has then traveled back in time I used a clock ticking and then a change of music to a 1920's song.

Research And Planning: Social Networking

I added a tweet asking people to complete my survey. This will expand my audience and give more people a chance to access my survey. I did this to gain more responses and have a wider range of research to look at and interpret into my work.

Research And Planning: Examples Of Editing Transitions

I have found this editing transition which I would like to include in our trailer. I believe this transition will be most effective when showing clips of the diary and the 1940's character. It will show the link and relationship between the two.

Research And Planning: Editors Role

The role of the editor is to work with all of the recorded footage and create a final sequence. The editor also chooses what type of transitions to use and when it is appropriate to use them.

Edward Dmytryk lays out seven "rules of cutting" that a good editor should follow:
  • "Rule 1: NEVER make a cut without a positive reason."
  • "Rule 2: When undecided about the exact frame to cut on, cut long rather than short."
  • "Rule 3: Whenever possible cut 'in movement'."
  • "Rule 4: The 'fresh' is preferable to the 'stale'."
  • "Rule 5: All scenes should begin and end with continuing action."
  • "Rule 6: Cut for proper values rather than proper 'matches'."
  • "Rule 7: Substance first—then form."
On my following posts you will find some extra research which I have conducted relating to the different types of editing transitions which I would like to use.

Research And Planning: Proposal Outcome (Group Meeting 2)

Having presented and discussed our two proposal ideas with our tutor Angela we have decided to choose Proposal 1. This is due to the plot idea being more original and 'new' compared to other romance films which have been out or are recently out at the minuet.

We will be taking proposal 1 through to treatment and presenting it in greater detail with specific sounds, cinematography and editing for each part. The mise-en-scene will also be looked at and thoroughly researched to give the audience a clear view of the narrative and different time periods in which it will be set.

Nicole has already done some location research of her own which is up on her blog along with pictures and descriptions. You can find Nicole's research through this link:
