Research And Planning: Questionnaire Evaluation

I will take the results of these answers into consideration when creating my romance trailer. They were helpful as I now know what an audience thinks about the romance genre and what they would like to see within a trailer.

"What is your opinion on the romance genre?" - This question will tell me peoples views and what they do and don't like. Majority of people said they like romance as it is the perfect escapist genre and you can feel the emotion. People who don't like the romance genre said that it is too repetitive and can be exaggerated. With these responses I would like to interpret them into my trailer and make sure that it is not repetitive and doesn't create unrealistic expectations so that I can reach out to a wider audience.

"How can a romance film attract more of a male audience?" - This question has helped me gain a greater knowledge of how I can attract a male audience. I can then use these answers when making my poster and magazine cover to try and gain a greater male audience.

"What do you expect to see within a romance trailer?" - I can use the suggestions and answers from this question to interpret them into my trailer to give the audience what they want.

Research And Planning: Action Plan

I created an action plan to set myself targets and track my process within the lesson. This motivated me to complete as many of them as I could.

Research And Planning: First Group Meeting

My group includes: Nicole, Nasrin and I

We have discussed which elements each of us would like to do within our trailer and which one we will be doing together. I have decided to do the editing, Nasrin has chosen to do the sound and Nicole has chosen to do mise-en-scene. Cinematography is going to be the shared element as we will all need to do part of the filming each.

Research And Planning: Completed Questionnaire

These are 3 of my completed questionnaires. The ones I have selected to upload all show a range of answers.

Research And Planning: Love, Rosie Trailer

Recently I have watched a trailer for a British romance film called 'Love, Rosie' which is being released soon. This is relevant to my research as our group has decided to do a British independent romance film. I believe that once watching this film and then comparing it to the trailer it will give me more knowledge on what kind of context (peaks/moments of high action) to add into the trailer and what to leave out (troughs/moments of low action).

Research And Planning: What Is A Trailer?

From doing my trailer analysis I have found that a trailer must include:
  • A title
  • A release date
  • A narrative/ moments of high action/peaks
  • Age?
  • Colour scheme - related to genre
  • Voice overs
  • Company titles
  • Score -  related to genre
  • Actors names
  • Normality - disruption

Research And Planning: Interview Questions

These are the questions I will be using for my audience interview videos. The questions I have selected to use will help me when I come to create my trailer, magazine cover and poster.

  • What is your favourite romance film and why?
  • What attracts you to a romance film?
  • How can you tell that a film is of the romance genre? (Colours, actors, music etc)
  • What do you typically find in a romance film regarding the context? (The plot line, disruption and the outcome)
  • Who do you think romance films are targeted at and why?
  • How do you think they are targeted?
  • How can we attract more male audiences to romance films?
  • What would you like to see more or less of in a romance film?
  • What genre of music would you like to see more of in a romance trailer?

Research And Planning: Trailer Analysis 2 - About Time

Genre
Using steve neale's theroy of genre ("Genre is a repetition with and underlying pattern of variation") we can clearly see that this is a romance film as it follows the typical conventions of a romance trailer but still has its own style. Through narrative and editing we can see that it is of the romance genre as the story tells us that it is based upon a relationship of the protagonists. The slow paced editing during the 'romantic' parts also reflects the genre. These are typical conventions of a romance film that the adience would recognise clearly.

Representation
This trailer represents a typical boy meets girl romance story. The main character Tim plays the role of an awkward 21 year old who wants to find love. He learns that he can travel in time and tries to make his world perfect. He then meets Mary and uses his 'power' to become closer to her and learn more about her and correct mistakes he has made. Throughout the trailer you begin to see that Tim uses his power too much and it changes his whole life, making him never be with his wife or have children. Both characters are represented as 'acting' their typical age and living in the moment.

Narrative
The narrative of the trailer shows us that this is a typical romance film. Using Propps theroy we can clearly see that Mary would play the 'princess' and Tim would be the hero. I do not think that within this narrative there would be a clear 'viallain' because the narrative isnt about someone or something trying to break up the relatioship between the chracters. The disruption within the narrative would be Tim finding out that he has powers and then using them for his own good. The climax would be Tim going back to a point in time which is irreversable and then changes him life forver. The new equilibrium would be Tim finally being with Mary and all of his problems have been solved.

Audience
The audeince that I think would be attracted to this film is an older group of people at least 15+. This is due to the complexity of the characters and narrative. A younger audeince would not fully understand. Also because the characters are 21 and not in the 'high school phase' an older audience is more likely to watch it. Male audiences may be attracted to this film s the lead is also a male which they can possibly relate to. This film is attractive to people with interests in british independant films and who are looking for an escape.

Media Language
Due to this movie being about time travel as lot of fades are used to show the passing/going back in time. The fades also link the two scenes together and show there is a 'relatioship' between the two. Also because it is an independant 'realist' film straight cuts are used to give the realist sense to the audience. Mostly close ups are used to show the audience the characters expresions and emotions. Due to it being based in a small English town the mise-en-scene which is used is mostly deserted beaches and cobble streets. The costumes which are worn would be typical of that time as I believe it is set slightly in the past. The sound is mostly dialogue to explain the complex narrative of the trailer.

Research And Planning: Top 20 Romance Films (IMDb)

Majority of the films on the top 20 list are romance-comedy films or book-film adaptations. I think the reason for these types of films being popular is that with book-film adaptations they already have an existing audience so there will already be a hype about the film. With rom-com films they attract a wider audience as men are more likely to watch them. This is because men are less likely to watch a film based around a highly romantic plot line, with the comedy element involved it is more likely to appeal to them.

Another correlation I have found between the films is that most of them were released within the last 3 years because they are new so their audience will be new and fresh to the romance genre. I also think the reason for them all being recent films is because of the link with the book-film adaptations. More books are becoming popular so conglomerate companies are more inclined to create them.

Research And Planning: Photoshop Challenge

Photoshop Challenge

This was my Photoshop challenge film poster. I created a romance poster as that is my chosen genre for my trailer. After completing my genre research I found that romance posters always feature the two main characters close together. I have also included the title of the film and the actors names. At the bottom of the poster I have created the release date and the credits as I will need to do this for my own poster.

Research And Planning: Genre Research - Comedy

Examples of Comedy film trailers

Conventions of a Comedy film trailer
  • High key lighting and bright colours - usually a mixture of blues, yellow. Colours associated with happiness.
  • Medium shots to capture the characters expression
  • Enhanced sounds to add humorous quality

Examples of Comedy film posters

Conventions of a Comedy Film Poster
  • Usually more than one character on the front, each with different expressions to show discomfort and being mischievous
  • High key lighting to give a comedic sense and highlight
  • Fonts and titles are usually plain to make the main focus of the poster

Research And Planning: Genre Research - Fantasy

Examples of Fantasy film trailers

Conventions of a Fantasy film trailer
  • Uses of fast and slow paced editing to show the journey of the character and their back story and the action they come across.
  • 'Dream like' sense - uses of fade in and fade out (some times fade out to black and back into another scene)
  • High key lighting used towards beginning to show the character in their typical and normal settings. Low key lighting during action parts and to show the characters journey throughout the trailer
  • Plot lines assumed and kept basic, not to confuse the audience too much

Examples of Fantasy film posters:

Conventions of a Fantasy film poster:
  • Low key lighting, brightened by uses of one main colour (usually blue or green)
  • Main character surrounded by their 'fantasy world' to give the audience an insight to what the film is about
  • Simple uses of text so that it doesn't take the audiences attention away from the image on the poster
  • Character on the front usually seen with a weapon or or 'creature' from their world

Research And Planning: Genre Research - Horror

Examples of Horror trailers

Conventions of a Horror trailer:
  • Low key lighting to show fear and to hide the initial 'threat' - makes the audience want to watch to see what will happen and what the threat is
  • Shows mostly the action filled scenes and the scene of disruption to capture the plot of the film
  • Fast paced editing to show action and to also hide the threat which remains a mystery to the audience
  • Dark atmosphere, either a forrest or abandoned house at night (isolated locations)
  • Sounds include doors creaking, high pitch screaming, "Who's there?" and "What do you want"
  • Title of the film cuts the the scene off before any real 'action' happens or anything too important to the plot line is revealed

Examples of Horror film posters

Conventions of a Horror poster:
  • Uses of monotone colours or red to signify danger and warning. The colours black, white and grey show there is no or little hope or life for the characters.
  • Poster typically has one focal point i.e the main character looking disheveled and worn out, the setting which will usually hide the threat so it is almost impossible to see but still noticeable or the character with their faces covered to hide the threat.
  • Low key lighting is used to make the posters look dark and 'evil'.
  • Usually contains a reference to other films or true stories e.g 'From the producers of sinister' or 'Based on real events'.

Research And Planning: Genre Research - Romance

Examples Of Romance Trailers

Conventions of a Romance trailer:

  • Long lingering shots of couples
  • Voice overs narrating the characters love story
  • Slow score - usually a piano or violin

  • Fade transitions to show the link between shots and the characters relationships. Also to make the trailer flow more smoothly and give a romantic effect

Examples Of Romance Film Posters

Conventions of a Romance film poster:
  • The two characters are usually close together to show their relationship
  • Use of bright colours (usually red or pink which signify love and romance)
  • Use of 'romanic' settings e.g a beach, restaurant
